Bachelor Students Interview

Anouk's Story on Upskill of Udayana Bali Tropical Biology and Conservation Semester

"This semester in Bali opened my eyes to new possibilities. It gave me the chance to explore different aspects of biology and conservation, like marine ecology in the coral reefs and sustainable land management practices. The experience also helped me identify my passion for environmental management. In one course, we explored the potential of using cassava starch to create biodegradable plastics – a project that sparked my interest in pursuing a career in sustainable materials development." Anouk, Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg, Germany

In this article, she shares her experiences—from the laid-back rhythm of island life to the excitement of hands-on field excursions. Discover what makes Bali a unique and unforgettable place to study. Through her story, you'll discover why Bali isn't just a destination—it's an adventure.

"One of the first things I noticed was the relaxed pace of life in Bali. Everything felt calmer, allowing me to focus on my studies without the stress and rush of city life back in Germany. "

Five years before I joined the semester program in Udayana, I spent a week in Bali, and it left a lasting impression. When I decided to study abroad, I knew I wanted to return to Bali to truly experience its culture, natural beauty, and vibrant student life. This time, I was here for an entire semester, enrolled in the Upskill Tropical Biology and Conservation program at Udayana University. Here's what made my experience so special.

One of the first things I noticed was the relaxed pace of life in Bali. Everything felt calmer, allowing me to focus on my studies without the stress and rush of city life back in Germany. Yet, if I ever needed a burst of energy, there were plenty of lively spots to explore. This balance of tranquility and excitement made it the perfect place to study and live.

As part of the program, we went on some fantastic excursions. My favorite was visiting the coral reefs during snorkeling trips. Seeing the vibrant marine life up close was a unique experience that deepened my understanding of tropical biology. The richness of Bali's natural environment made it a fantastic place to study conservation. I also had the opportunity to visit a turtle conservation project, where I learned about the efforts to protect these incredible creatures. It was amazing to see how communities in Bali are working to preserve their natural heritage.

Student life in Bali was a great mix of learning and fun. I loved the diverse food scene—nasi campur quickly became my favorite dish—and the chance to meet people from all over the world. The relationships I formed with my fellow students and professors were invaluable. We shared not just academic knowledge but also cultural experiences, making the whole journey even more enriching.

This semester in Bali opened my eyes to new possibilities. It gave me the chance to explore different aspects of biology and conservation, helping me understand what I truly enjoy. While I appreciated the horticulture lessons, I realized that plant biology wasn't my strongest suit. Instead, I found myself drawn to environmental management and exploring innovative ideas like making biodegradable plastics from manioc root. It was a creative spark that could influence my future career path.

Bali offers a unique combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and academic opportunities. The tropical setting is ideal for anyone interested in biology and conservation. The hands-on experiences, like visiting turtle conservation projects and coral reefs, are unparalleled. Plus, the slower pace of life and the welcoming atmosphere make it easy to involve yourself in the local culture.

If you're considering studying abroad, I highly recommend the Upskill Study's Tropical Biology and Conservation program. Don't miss this opportunity to experience the best of Bali while gaining valuable academic insights!
